Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained new documents from the United States Air Force detailing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s use of United States Air Force aircraft in 2010. According to the documents, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Pelosi used Air Force aircraft for 43 flights from January 1 to October 1, 2010. According to documents previously uncovered by Judicial Watch, by comparison, Nancy Pelosi logged 47 flights in the prior nine-month period, April 1, 2009, to January 1, 2010.

The most recent documents uncovered by Judicial Watch include a Passenger Mission Activity chart detailing all of former Speaker Pelosi’s flights January 1 to October 1, 2010, as well as detailed shopping lists for some flights, flight authorization forms, Mission Expense Records and internal Air Force correspondence related to the flights. Among the highlights from the documents, obtained pursuant to a FOIA request filed on September 10, 2010:

Pelosi used the Air Force aircraft for a total of 43 trips, covering 90,155 miles, from January 1 through October 1, 2010. The Air Force documented in-flight expenses for 22 of these flights totaling $1,821.33. The Air Force did not provide expense information for the remaining 21 flights.
Former Speaker Pelosi received chocolate covered strawberries as a birthday surprise on a March 26, 2010 flight. According to one internal Air Force email sent on March 25, 2010: “The speaker’s office is requesting egg salad sandwiches on wheat toast with fruit (watermelon, etc) for desert [sic]. It’s the speaker’s B-Day tomorrow so we’re also asking for something like chocolate covered strawberries (dark chocolate preferred)…” The immediate response to the email from another member of the Air Force staff: “Copy all. We’ll plan something for the birthday and take care of the meal.”

According to previous documents uncovered by Judicial Watch, the former Speaker’s military travel cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 over one two-year period — $101,429.14 of which was for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol. For example, purchases for one Pelosi-led congressional delegation traveling from Washington, DC, through Tel Aviv, Israel to Baghdad, Iraq May 15-20, 2008, included: Johnny Walker Red scotch, Grey Goose vodka, E&J brandy, Baileys Irish Cream, Maker’s Mark whiskey, Courvoisier cognac, Bacardi Light rum, Jim Beam whiskey, Beefeater gin, Dewar’s scotch, Bombay Sapphire gin, Jack Daniel’s whiskey, Corona beer and several bottles of wine.

Foster's assessment came a day after Obama in his State of the Union message told lawmakers that he's open to improvements in the law, but unwilling to rehash the health care debate of the past two years. Cheers broke out among GOP lawmakers on the House floor on Wednesday as Boehner, a veteran lawmaker from Ohio, defeated Pelosi in the roll call for speaker. His rise to the helm of the House was virtually guaranteed months ago, when the midterm elections returned Republicans to control of the House, which they had surrendered to Democrats four years ago. Pelosi was the first woman to rise to the speaker’s post.

The 112th Congress convened with prayers, pomp and partisanship, as Republicans vowed to use their new House majority to battle President Barack Obama on health care, spending, taxes and other issues.

In the Senate, lawmakers moved almost immediately to a debate over filibuster rules in which Democratic and Republican leaders accused each other of obstructing progress and trying to game the parliamentary system.

In the House, children and grandchildren of new lawmakers fidgeted, temporarily lending lighter moments to a chamber certain to see fierce debates and partisan votes in the next two years. Reminiscent of the scandal in which she used military aircraft as her personal taxi, Nancy Pelosi stuck it to U.S. taxpayers on her way out as House Speaker with a lavish Hawaiian vacation featuring secret service and local police motorcades financed by Americans.

The famously corrupt California congresswoman spent her last days as Speaker at an exotic resort in Kona’s historic settlement of Ka’upulehu, according to a Hawaiian newspaper that’s working to get figures on local police and secret service costs. Not surprisingly, the feds refuse to provide details on Pelosi’s security detail and the Hawaii Police Department claims it can’t release the number of officers it dedicated to Pelosi’s motorcade, whether they were pulled from other duties or paid overtime.

What’s certain, however, is that it cost big bucks and Americans are getting stuck with the hefty bill. Pelosi stayed in an elaborate suite of an exclusive “natural tropical paradise” that rents for $10,000 a night. She took a private plane to Hawaii and was escorted throughout her trip by a motorcade of secret service and local police officers. Two Hawaii County Police vehicles camped outside the resort to guard Pelosi during her week-long stay, according to sources quoted in the story.

During a similar jaunt to the big island’s chick Kona Coast last year, Hawaii County taxpayers dished out more than $21,000 for Pelosi’s local security alone. It’s not clear whether she arrived by private plane for that particular getaway, but it’s reasonable to assume she booked an Air Force jet since Pelosi used the military as her personal airline during her tenure as Speaker.


In fact, the veteran lawmaker was crowned Air Pelosi after a lengthy Judicial Watch investigation uncovered evidence of her shocking abuse of military luxury travel. Internal Pentagon records obtained through public records requests document Pelosi’s numerous requests for military escorts and aircraft to ferry her and her family around. Other documents demonstrate that Pelosi used Air Force aircraft as her own personal party planes, racking up more than $100,000 for in-flight expenses such as food and alcohol.

Pelosi has also been embroiled in several other scandals recently, including campaign finance violations, quadrupling the rent of her district office amid a dire financial crisis in her state and ignoring serious incidents of corruption within her own party after vowing to “drain the swamp” in Congress.

Under the headline, "Construction Stops at Physician Hospitals," Politico reports today that "Physician Hospitals of America says that construction had to stop at 45 hospitals nationwide or they would not be able to bill Medicare for treatments." Stopping construction at doctor-owned hospitals might not seem like the best way to boost the economy or to promote greater access and choice in health care, but that exactly what Obamacare is doing.


Kenneth Artz of the Heartland Institute explains, "Section 6001 of the health care law effectively bans new physician-owned hospitals (POHs) from starting up, and it keeps existing ones from expanding." Politico adds, "Friday [New Year's Eve] marked the last day physician-owned hospitals could get Medicare certification covering their new or expanded hospitals, one of the latest provisions of the reform law to go into effect."

This little-noticed but particularly egregious aspect of Obamacare is, by all accounts, a concession to the powerful American Hospital Association (AHA), a supporter of Obamacare, which prefers to have its member hospitals operate without competition from hospitals owned by doctors.

Dr. Michael Russell, president of Physician Hospitals of America, which has filed suit to try to stop this selective building-ban from going into effect, says, "There are so many regulations [in Obamacare] and they are so onerous and intrusive that we believe that the section [Section 6001] was deliberately designed so no physician owned hospital could successfully comply." DUMBACRATS: 111th Congress Added More Debt Than First 100 Congresses Combined: $10,429 Per Person in U.S.

(CNSNews.com) - The federal government has accumulated more new debt--$3.22 trillion ($3,220,103,625,307.29)—during the tenure of the 111th Congress than it did during the first 100 Congresses combined, according to official debt figures published by the U.S. Treasury.

That equals $10,429.64 in new debt for each and every one of the 308,745,538 people counted in the United States by the 2010 Census.

The total national debt of $13,858,529,371,601.09 (or $13.859 trillion), as recorded by the U.S. Treasury at the close of business on Dec. 22, now equals $44,886.57 for every man, woman and child in the United States.

In fact, the 111th Congress not only has set the record as the most debt-accumulating Congress in U.S. history, but also has out-stripped its nearest competitor, the 110th, by an astounding $1.262 trillion in new debt.

During the 110th Congress—which, according to the Clerk of the House, officially convened on Jan. 4, 2007 and adjourned on Jan. 4, 2009--the national debt increased $1.957 trillion. When that Congress adjourned less than two years ago, it claimed the record as the most debt-accumulating Congress in U.S. history. As it turned out, however, its record did not last long.

The $3.22 trillion in new federal debt run up during the 111th Congress exceeds by 64 percent the $1.957 trillion in new debt run up during the 110th.

Although the 111th Congress cast its last vote on Dec. 22, it will not officially adjourn until next week.

Democrats controlled both the House and Senate in the 110th and 111th Congresses.

The 108th Congress ($1.159 trillion in new debt) and 109th ($1.054 trillion in new debt) take third and fourth place among all U.S. Congresses for accumulating debt. In both these Congresses, Republicans controlled both the House and Senate.

Still, the $3.22 trillion in new debt accumulated during the record-setting 111th Congress is more than three times the $1.054 trillion in new debt accumulated by the last Republican-majority Congress (the 109th) which adjourned on Dec. 8, 2006.

Historically, according to the U.S. Treasury, the federal debt did not reach $3.22 trillion until September 1990, during the 101st Congress. Between the first Congress, which adjourned in 1791 leaving behind approximately $75 million in debt, and the convening of the 101st Congress, which occurred on Jan. 3, 1989, the national debt grew to $2.684 trillion.

During the Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) tenure as speaker, which commenced on Jan. 4, 2007, the federal government has run up $5.177 trillion in new debt. That is about equal to the total debt the federal government accumulated in the first 220 years of the nation's existence, with the federal debt rising from $5.173 trillion on July 23, 1996 to $5.181 trillion on July 24, 1996. The GOP lawmaker who loudly voiced his displeasure over being denied an opportunity to speak said Tuesday the House has become “dark, mismanaged“ and ”undemocratic.”

Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.), the outgoing GOP lawmaker and ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, said he could have been more “civil” when he unleashed a tirade on the acting House Speaker after she denied him an opportunity to speak on the floor.

“Listening to myself — I was pretty upset yesterday,” he said on the conservative Sean Hannity radio show.

Hannity advised Buyer not to apologize. Here’s how Buyer is playing it:

“We all try to control ourselves. I am pugnacious,” he said. “But I also believe we have to be very civil. I was dumbfounded that I would not have been recognized to speak.”

By a vote of 150-43, House Democrats voted for the California lawmaker as their leader over challenger Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina.

Votes were cast by secret ballot.

Pelosi had four members speak on her behalf in the Democrats' closed-door meeting. She was nominated by Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, who -- according to a high level source -- asked colleagues "how can we fold on her when she's not folding on us?" Reps. Henry Cuellar (TX), Gwen Moore (WI), and Jared Polis (CO) also spoke.

Shuler was nominated by Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah. Reps. Larry Kissell (NC) and Mike Ross (AR) spoke for Shuler during the nominating process as well, with Shuler speaking on his own behalf before the votes were taken.

Pelosi's Democratic critics hoped to postpone the leadership election until after the House's Thanksgiving break. That proposal failed by a 129-68 vote earlier today.

Pelosi's second-in-command will again be Maryland's Steny Hoyer, who was elected Minority Whip by acclamation rather than by recorded vote. A compromise between Hoyer and Rep. James Clyburn, who had threatened to challenge him for the job, paved the way for Hoyer's uncontested selection for the slot.

On the other side of the aisle, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio was unanimously elected by House Republicans to serve as their leader in the next Congress.

"The job of the next Speaker is to work to restore the institution ... restore it to being the People's House," said Boehner after being voted to the top post, according to excerpts of his speech. "It's not about us; it's about them."

Also Wednesday, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor was selected by his Republican colleagues to serve as the Majority Leader for the 112th Congress.

I don’t know what they’re so depressed about. With Nancy Pelosi back in charge, surely they’re only two years away from a new House majority.

A staffer for a congressional Democrat who came up short on Tuesday reports that a team of about five people stopped by their offices this morning to talk about payroll, benefits, writing a résumé, and so forth, with staffers who are now job hunting.

But one of the staffers was described as a “counselor” to help with the emotional aspect of the loss — and a section in the packet each staffer was given dealt with the stages of grief (for instance, Stage One being anger, and so on).

“It was like it was about death,” the staffer said. “It was bizarre.” The staffer did say the portions about the benefits and résumé writing were instructive.

Stage One isn’t anger, it’s denial. Anger is Stage Two. Which makes me think that maybe this is actually a covert way of trying to torpedo Pelosi’s bid for minority leader. (Her office says she wasn’t the one who sent the counselors.) The only conceivable psychological explanation for why House liberals would want to retain her is that they’re stuck in Stage One; if the counselors can move them to Stage Two, then, just possibly, the healing can begin. We’ll know they’re on the track to “wellness” when they dump her and we start seeing more enraged rants about the “white right” and their “temper tantrum” online.

It took Democrats in the House of Representatives 40 years to become out-of-touch enough to get thrown out of office in 1994. It took 12 years for the Republicans who replaced them to abandon their principles and be repudiated in 2006. Now it appears that the current Democratic majority has lost voter confidence in only four years.

He's not sticking around, like so many former members of Congress, to lobby inside the Beltway. That allows him to be candid about Congress and his party.

"It's been an authoritarian, closed leadership. That style plus a general groupthink mentality didn't work when Tom DeLay called the shots," Mr. Baird says. "We've made some of the same damn mistakes, and we were supposed to be better. That's the heartbreak."

Mr. Baird, 54, is a loyal Democrat who voted for all of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's legislative priorities, including the stimulus bill, cap and trade and ObamaCare. But he admits all three have serious flaws.

Mr. Baird recalls that he was "very excited" when his party took control of Congress in 2006, but he saw ominous signs early on. Before the 2006 election, he says, Mrs. Pelosi had 30 members working on a rules package to make the House more ethical and deliberative. "We abandoned all that work after the election, and leaders told us we should trust them to clean things up. The number of Americans receiving food stamps rose to a record 41.8 million in July as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government said.

Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 18 percent from a year earlier and increased 1.4 percent from June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a statement on its website. Participation has set records for 20 straight months.

Unemployment in September may have reached 9.7 percent, according to a Bloomberg News survey of analysts in advance of the release of last month’s rate on Oct. 8. Unemployment was 9.6 percent in July, near levels last seen in 1983.

An average of 43.3 million people, more than an eighth of the population, will get food stamps each month in the year that began Oct. 1, according to White House estimates.
