Gov. Christie recants campaign promise of not altering N.J. firefighters' pensions

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie says he had to renege on a campaign promise to New Jersey firefighters not to touch their pensions in order to save their pensions. During the campaign last year, the Republican told firefighters he would not "eliminate, change, or alter" their pensions. Last week, Christie proposed pension and health benefits reforms that would raise the retirement age for public workers and require current employees and retirees to shoulder a substantially higher portion of their health care costs.

The governor says past promises made by other governors about the level of benefits "can't be kept."

The state pension system is underfunded by at least $46 billion. The health benefits system is underfunded by $76 billion.

NOTE- The Police and Fireman already contribute to their pensions at a higher rate than most. They should be the only profession who should have their health benefits paid for by the taxpayer. They protect the community and provide services for everyone. They should be allowed to retire after 25 years of service and receive their 65% pension. Gov. Walker of Wisconsin got it right by exempting Police and Fire. Christie got it wrong...

The taxpayer shouldn't have to pick up the tab for teachers, nurses, ball park employees, cafeteria workers and labor unions. There's a big difference between them and public SAFETY employees.

With all of the welfare, waste, abuse, fraud and entitlements in New Jersey, Gov. Christie can find the money elsewhere if he looks hard enough.

But he is dead wrong on illegal immigration and dead wrong about not challenging the government run health care bill. Regarding the former, he sounds like John McCain three years ago. "Commonsense path to citizenship." Regarding the latter, the cost of joining with the other states in challenging the health care monstrosity is minimal. That's a poor excuse. And why is it taking his attorney general and commissioner of health so long to conclude that it is unconstitutional for the federal government to compel private citizens to buy services from other citizens? This is perplexing, unless he supports the bill.

I am going to have to re-evaluate my past praise of Christie. If this article is accurate, this is very disappointing.

PRE-SPEECH PREDICTIONS: ‘Not Gonna Fly’: Limbaugh Offers Pre-State of the Union Analysis

During his Tuesday radio program, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh made a few interesting predictions about President Obama’s Tuesday night State of the Union address.

Rush, a critic of many members’ decisions to ignore the traditionally divided seating arrangement, insisted Tuesday that Washington’s atmosphere of fake bipartisanship is “not gonna fly.”

“This is not what this election was about,” Limbaugh said. “The election in November was not about Republicans and Democrats getting along with each other. This is a myth the media and the Democrats continue to put forth, but it is not what that election was about. This election was about defeating Obama, it was about stopping Obama, it was about stopping the Democrats. It was not about sitting with them and getting along with him,” he said.

Additionally, Rush suggested that Democrats and Republicans choosing to sit together during Obama’s State of the Union address have one common enemy: the tea party.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. John Boehner was elected speaker of the House, sealing newfound Republican power-sharing in Congress and drawing the curtain on the history-making Nancy Pelosi era at the helm.

Cheers broke out among GOP lawmakers on the House floor on Wednesday as Boehner, a veteran lawmaker from Ohio, defeated Pelosi in the roll call for speaker. His rise to the helm of the House was virtually guaranteed months ago, when the midterm elections returned Republicans to control of the House, which they had surrendered to Democrats four years ago. Pelosi was the first woman to rise to the speaker’s post.

The 112th Congress convened with prayers, pomp and partisanship, as Republicans vowed to use their new House majority to battle President Barack Obama on health care, spending, taxes and other issues.

In the Senate, lawmakers moved almost immediately to a debate over filibuster rules in which Democratic and Republican leaders accused each other of obstructing progress and trying to game the parliamentary system.

In the House, children and grandchildren of new lawmakers fidgeted, temporarily lending lighter moments to a chamber certain to see fierce debates and partisan votes in the next two years. House Republicans, for instance, plan to vote within days to overturn Obama’s 2010 health care overhaul, but they acknowledge it’s a symbolic gesture because the Senate will not concur.

Vice President Joe Biden gave the oath of office to senators, while the House began a long roll call that ended in Boehner’s election. Nineteen House Democrats refused to vote for Pelosi as speaker, baring the lingering wounds from last fall’s bitter elections that cost their party 64 House seats. RINO WATCH: Scott Brown Disappointing

Senator Scott Brown’s decision to buck his party leadership in recent days on the “don’t ask, don’t tell’’ military policy and on a nuclear arms treaty has set off a new wave of anger among some of the activists who helped elect him — and renewed talk among conservatives that he might face a primary challenge.

Some Tea Party movement leaders who dislike Brown’s votes acknowledge that the Massachusetts Republican has demonstrated his independent and pragmatic streak, and by doing so may strengthen his chances at reelection in 2012. No primary challenger has emerged, and it is unclear whether a newcomer could wage a serious fight against Brown and his $6.8 million war chest.

But the threat of a primary challenge from conservatives — as well as the potential that national Tea Party groups will withhold financial support — appears to have grown, according to the movement’s activists. Brown’s votes in the past week follow his crucial support for the overhaul of financial regulations, which remains a particular sore point with conservatives.

“I think that there will be a primary challenge,’’ said Christen Varley, president of the Greater Boston Tea Party. “There’s enough of an underground movement in the Tea Party movement as seeing him as not being conservative enough. WHICH REPUBLICANS SOLD OUT?

With the new Republican power in Washington, it is doubly important to keep a close eye on the doings of GOP Senators and Congressmen to spot those who are straying from orthodoxy, seduced by power and the insider clubiness that characterizes Washington.

In the Lame Duck session, we want to draw attention to six Republican U.S. Senators who voted with the Democrats on a key issue. We should all bear their apostasy in mind and, in particular, make them mindful of the possibility of primary challenges to their re-nomination.

Two Senators, in particular, deserve to have primary challengers take them on in 2012 — Tennessee’s Bob Corker and Mississippi’s Thad Cochran. Both men voted for the START treaty which conceded a permanent edge in nuclear weaponry to Russia. While the Treaty provided for equal and reduced stockpiles of strategic warheads, it did nothing to address the vast piles of tactical nuclear warheads held by the Russians. The Russians have 10,000 of these battlefield nuclear weapons piled up in the stockpile while we have only a few hundred.

In addition, START’s preamble blocks the U.S. from developing missile defenses, now especially important in light of North Korea’s and Iran’s expanding capacities.

Both Corker and Cochran face re-election in 2012. They should both be challenged for the nomination by men who put our need for national security above appeasing the Russians. Having suppressed democracy, wiped out free speech, taken over all the media, nationalized their oil and energy industry, invaded Georgia, enabled the Iranian nuclear program, and tried to establish a natural gas monopoly in Europe, what else does Putin need to do before Corker and Cochran realize that appeasement won’t work?

Bob Corker’s vote for START probably stems from the insider-old boy network on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on which he sits. Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who also voted for START, sits alongside him on the Republican minority on the committee. Led by Senator Richard Lugar, the ranking GOP member on the panel, all three voted for START. Unfortunately, Isakson is not up for re-election until 2016. When he does come up for re-election, we hope that the citizens of Georgia’s Republican Party hold him to account.

Lamar Alexander, also of Tennessee, backed START and faces re-election in 2014.

In a previous column, we called attention to the defections of Republican Senators Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Mike Crapo of Idaho from the ranks of fiscal conservatives. Both Coburn and Crapo voted for the recommendations of the Bowles-Simpson Deficit Reduction Commission which recommended cutting the deductions for home mortgages and charitable contributions by two-thirds for most taxpayers and urged the enactment of almost $1 trillion in new taxes.

Coburn and Crapo only announced their intention to endorse the Commission report after they had been re-elected on November 2, 2010. Now they are safe in their seats until 2016. But we hope to be still writing columns by then and will remind the voters of those two conservative states how ill-served they were by their Republican senators.

ABC News reports that Scott Brown has announced that he will support a stand-alone repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” ending the expulsion of gay and lesbian troops from the military. Brown’s decision gives Harry Reid 61 votes, enough to pass a cloture vote for the policy, and one final hurrah for the Democratic-controlled 111th Session — if he can fit it into the schedule:

Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown today voiced his support for a stand-alone repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, bringing the bill one vote over the 60-vote threshold that it will need to reach if and when the Senate votes on the measure in the coming weeks.
“Sen. Brown accepts the Pentagon’s recommendation to repeal the policy after proper preparations have been completed. If and when a clean repeal bill comes up for a vote, he will support it,” said Brown spokesperson Gail Gitcho.

Brown’s backing means that – on paper – supporters of the repeal have61 senators in favor of the bill. On Wednesday Republicans Olympia Snowe of Maine and Lisa Murkowski both announced their support for the stand-alone repeal. The House passed the clean repeal on Wednesday and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has vowed to bring it to a vote in the Senate before the end of the year.

However, Reid has warned that bringing the bill to a vote in the Senate is not an issue of support, but rather of time. With just over a week before Christmas, the Senate is only now kicking off debate on the START nuclear treaty and a massive $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill. It will likely be early next week before the Senate wraps up work on those two measures – and numerous GOP senators have voiced stern opposition to both bills, preferring instead to fund the government into early next year and go home for the holidays. That leaves little time for the Senate to pass the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal.

ATHENS, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore said support for corn-based ethanol in the United States was "not a good policy", weeks before tax credits are up for renewal.

U.S. blending tax breaks for ethanol make it profitable for refiners to use the fuel even when it is more expensive than gasoline. The credits are up for renewal on Dec. 31.

Total U.S. ethanol subsidies reached $7.7 billion last year according to the International Energy Industry, which said biofuels worldwide received more subsidies than any other form of renewable energy.

"It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for (U.S.) first generation ethanol," said Gore, speaking at a green energy business conference in Athens sponsored by Marfin Popular Bank.

"First generation ethanol I think was a mistake. The energy conversion ratios are at best very small.

UPDATE The AP reports: [U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski] told supporters — who greeted her at an Anchorage convention center with chants of “Run, Lisa, Run!” — that she couldn’t walk away and ignore the pleas of Alaskans who urged her to offer them a choice between the “extremist” views of Miller, a self-described constitutional conservative and tea party favorite, and the “inexperience” of Democrat Scott McAdams, a small-town mayor.

“So I am here to tell you, you are disenfranchised no more,” she said.

Most don’t remember how Murkowski got to the Senate in the first place. Her father, then Governor of Alaska appointed her in 2002 to his seat after he won the Governorship. It caused an uproar in Alaska and because of this action, Governors can no longer appoint Senators to vacant seats.

She won one election and that was in 2004 which wasn’t difficult in Alaska. She is part of the ‘old boy’ network that freedom loving Alaskans have a huge distaste.

Her write in campaign will be a joke and as the others have said, she just needs to go away.

Lisa Murkowski may have conceded the Republican primary election to tea party favorite and Sarah Palin-backed Joe Miller, but she’s not out of the race yet. Sources close to the Senator are now saying she plans to mount a write-in campaign in a last-ditch effort to hold onto her seat in the U.S. Senate.

A Republican source tells CNN that Sen. Murkowski has informed “a few” close colleagues on the hill that she will run as a write-in candidate. A separate source with knowledge of her decision also tells CNN she plans to announce her write-in candidacy Friday.

With Murkowski re-entering the race, what was considered a near-certain win for Republicans may be in jeopardy. The announcement will reportedly happen at 6:00 p.m. local time in Anchorage (10:00 p.m. ET).

WATCH: Hannity and Specter Clash in Testy Interview

Sean Hannity and Sen. Arlen Specter engaged in a testy interview Tuesday as the Fox News conservative commentator accused the Pennsylvania Democrat of "political expediency."

Hannity questioned why Specter as a Republican voted against Elena Kagan for solicitor general, but is planning to vote to confirm her as a Supreme Court Justice after switching to the Democratic Party.

Specter offered his rationale, stating that Kagan did not answer key questions when she was President Obama's nominee for solicitor general.

Hannity said, "You can say whatever you want. I'm looking at your record. And the very strongest criticism Americans have right now is that politicians are out for themselves."

Hannity attacked what he called Specter's inconsistent voting record on healthcare reform, so-called "card check" legislation and Kagan.

After defending his votes on those issues and the stimulus package, the 80-year-old senator let Hannity know he was not pleased with how the interview was going.
