A Chicago charter school that recently received a grant of federal funds was founded and is led by activists who have been closely tied to the Nation of Islam while its campuses are named after former Nation of Islam activists and black radicals, WND has learned.

The federal government allocated $47,766 of funds from the Recovery Act for a food program for the Betty Shabazz International Charter Academy. This includes the 2010-2011 school year in which the funds were distributed to the USDA's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the school.

The U.S. Justice Department has demanded – and a federal judge has agreed – that residents of a North Carolina city cannot make their municipal elections nonpartisan because the Obama administration representatives don't like the possible outcomes that could result.

The result comes in a recent case involving Kinston, where voters overwhelmingly – the victory margin was about 2-1 – decided they wanted to leave the political affiliations off of candidates' names in their city elections.

Not so fast, said Barack Obama's Justice Department. If the affiliations are left off, a few white voters might not know who was the Democrat, and they might vote for a member of another party, the federal officials warned, and that can't be allowed.

After city officials waffled before the demand, several citizens challenged the order in court, and now a judge has turned them back without ruling on the issue itself. The judge said the citizens – taxpayers and voters in the city – had no "standing" to challenge how their own elections are run.

Kinston's plan was simple: make the elections nonpartisan so that voters would choose a name, not a political party.

However, the U.S. attorney general ordered the election results voided because "removing the partisan cue in municipal elections will, in all likelihood, eliminate the single factor that allows black candidates to be elected to office."

The federal government argued that "a majority of white Democrats support white Republicans over black Democrats in Kinston city elections," except for "a small group of white Democrats [who] maintain strong party allegiance and [who] will continue to vote along party lines, regardless of the race of the candidate.” READ MORE...

Obama's Reversal on 'Indigenous Peoples' Rights Stirs Concern Over Legal Claims.

President Obama's decision last week to reverse U.S. policy and back a U.N. declaration on the rights of "indigenous peoples" has touched off a debate on whether the move could boost American Indian legal claims over the ills they suffered dating back to the colonial period.

The president announced his decision at the White House Tribal Nations Conference last week, making the United States the last nation to endorse the statement -- the Bush administration had opposed it since it was adopted in 2007. American Indian advocacy groups cheered the move, finalized after a months-long administration review.

But John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the "abstract" document -- which in several sections discusses the "right to redress" -- will probably be used to fuel new legal claims. And he predicted the issue would complicate those cases more than it would help either side actually resolve them.

"It's a kind of feel-good document that has so many unclear phrases in it that nobody's really sure what it means when you agree to it," Bolton told FoxNews.com. "It's wrong and potentially dangerous to sign onto a document that you don't fully understand the implications of."

The non-binding U.N. document includes dozens of provisions but generally states that indigenous people should not be discriminated against, should be able to sustain their own political and social systems, and have rights to the "lands, territories and resources which they have traditionally owned" or used. ‘Travesty of Justice’: DOJ Official Denounces Handling of New Black Panther Voter Intimidation Case

Stephen Colbert was not the only one testifying on Capitol Hill today. Lost in the media circus following Colbert’s comments may have been the testimony of a far more important individual.

On Friday, Christopher Coates testified in front of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission about the Department of Justice’s handling of a voter intimidation case last year.

Coates is the whistle-blowing Justice Department official who revealed a “hostile atmosphere” within the department, and supports former Justice staffer J. Christian Adams’s claims of bias against cases that involved white victims and black defendants. Both have criticized the Justice Department’s downgrading of a case involving voter intimidation by the New Black Panther Party at a voting station in Philadelphia during 2008 presidential voting.

In his testimony Coates blasted “senior political appointees” at the DOJ for “gutting” the case.

“Given this outrageous conduct, it was a travesty of justice for the Department of Justice not to allow attorneys in the voting section to obtain nationwide injunctive relief against” the defendants, Coates testified.*

He said that he believes the Voting Rights Act has not been enforced equally, and that certain civil rights groups have pressured the department into molding it into a de facto law benefiting minorities: “Many of these groups act … as special interest lobbies for racial and ethnic minorities and demand not equal treatment but enforcement of the Voting Rights Act only for racial and language minorities.” READ MORE...
