The $787 billion economic stimulus package was responsible for keeping between 1.5 million and two million jobs in the economy through the end of 2009, White House economists said Tuesday, in a report that will fuel the political battle over the plan's impact.
The report comes days after new figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics put joblessness at 10% nationwide in December, the same as the previous month.
Unemployment has risen since the stimulus plan was passed last February. Some Democrats say this is proof of the need for additional jobs-creation programs, and President Barack Obama has said he will focus on jobs in the coming weeks. Republicans use official unemployment figures to make their case that stimulus efforts have been a costly failure.
