Obama the Centrist? Don't Be Fooled By His State of the Union Speech

If you’re looking for real specifics at tonight’s State of the Union, don’t hold your breath. The White House is billing the president’s annual January appearance in front of Congress much like something you’d hear at an “inauguration,” more atypical than most speeches that turn into political laundry lists.

If Obama’s inaugural address was any indication, expect a lofty oration that’s thin on details and heavy on the soaring rhetoric that helped propel the president into office. But don’t believe the spin that he’s moved to the middle. To win re-election, President Obama will, in true chameleon-like fashion, return to the man we met on the 2008 campaign trail, but only on the outside.

We’ll hear him talk about the deficit and how we need to be more responsible with our spending. But listen closely, as he’s expected to discuss more spending disguised as education and infrastructure investment.

First, the trillion dollar stimulus was intended to improve our infrastructure. That is, until the president admitted there is no such thing a "shovel ready" project. When it comes to education, bringing the cost of tuition down would be a more seductive theme, but in true liberal fashion, more spending is at the core of the president’s mission.

Obama will lecture us about jobs and how he is focused on creating employment opportunities, but this is the same promise he made in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Still our unemployment rate hovers above nine percent after two years of focusing on a largely unpopular health care push.

When Obama talks about jobs, he will do it while picking winners and losers. He’s in favor of green jobs, but won’t reduce the burden on business small or large. If he really were moving to the middle he’d endorse cutting corporate taxes instead of simply saying he'd look at it, and repeal the crushing taxes in the health care bill.

From his recent hiring of William Daley as his new White House chief of staff to his push last week against onerous regulation, to his new call for civility, all of these items are small ball moves or mere words, and words don’t equal specifics or an intention to act.

Obama can, on one hand, begin campaigning and extend a hand to Republicans through rhetoric. He can campaign and stay above the fray, as he is tired of sinking poll numbers due to partisan infighting and a lack of economic progress.

With the other hand he can wave on the czars and cabinet secretaries to lurch leftward and take care of his liberal friends. Just this week, three SEIU locals -- including the Chicago chapter of the union were waived from ObamaCare requirements by HHS. More and more, he will circumvent Congress and use the czars and the power of executive fiat to advance his liberal leanings.

That is why Republicans must make sure to give the country a glimpse of reality during their rebuttal. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is set to deliver the GOP response and it’s critical that he present a clear plan that contrasts the President’s lack of detail, and a roadmap for growth. This could result in political blowback, but there is plenty to cut and the GOP needs a backbone.

Despite the sunny tone, wages are still stagnant, jobs are still few and far between. We’re fighting two expensive wars with no end in sight. the housing market is a mess, foreclosures are at a record high and the debt is at $14 trillion. This is the true state of our union.

Tonight, America needs to see beyond the smokescreen. Don’t be fooled by a narrative that paints the picture of anything else. And don’t be fooled by the myth of an Obama in the middle.

Three days before Christmas, President Obama gathered his economic team in the West Wing's Roosevelt Room to review themes for his State of the Union address. The edge-of-the-cliff crisis he inherited had passed, but with more than 14 million Americans still out of work, he was looking for bold ways to bring down unemployment. The ideas presented to him, though, seemed familiar and uninspired. "You know, guys," he said, according to someone in the room, "I've told you before, I want you to come to me with ideas that excite me." Nothing he was hearing excited him

Obama's frustration could set the tone for the remainder of his term. For all the trials of war and terrorism, the economy has come to define his presidency. During the first half of his term, he used the tools of government to shape the nation's economy more aggressively than any president in 75 years. As the national debt rises and Republicans assume more power on Capitol Hill, it won't be easy finding ways to juice the economy that are exciting, effective and politically viable. Every day, in briefings, in trips around the country, in letters from the public, Obama is reminded of the many people who are still hurting. And he surely knows that if he cannot figure out in the next two years how to create jobs, he may lose his own.

Obama is fighting to keep Republicans, fresh from their fall electoral triumph, from reversing what he has started while prodding his own team to come up with something, anything, to put people back to work. "The president wanted to lower unemployment but didn't see a way to get more money out of Congress," one adviser who sat in on many such meetings told me. "He grew frustrated because the economic team didn't have that magic combination." Or as another adviser put it, "He was really frustrated that there weren't solutions on the cheap."

Obama has been casting about for ideas.

Really, Mr. President? $1 Billion to Get Re-elected

Bracing for a half-billion-dollar onslaught of outside GOP cash in 2012, President Barack Obama’s advisers are quietly working to bring back together the major donor base that produced a record-breaking fundraising haul in his first run for president.

In the past few months, Democratic National Committee aides have contacted several of Obama’s earliest financial backers to brainstorm about when and where to host the first money-raising events. Several big donors said they expect the Obama 2012 operation to open its doors this spring, with a string of fundraisers to generate the early cash needed to rebuild the president’s high-tech campaign operation.


But already some of Obama’s top financial backers are warning the White House: Raising money won’t be as easy this time around.

“They are getting organized in Chicago to start a massive two-year campaign, which I believe will be successful, but has extraordinarily large challenges in some of the major states,” said Philadelphia philanthropist Peter Buttenweiser, who hosted one of the first Obama presidential fundraisers in 2007 and is in talks to organize an early one for the re-election.

Obama’s team is running into resistance in at least one key fundraising hub — New York City, where some of Obama’s biggest 2008 backers have bitterly protested last year’s passage of financial reform legislation and what they perceived as an unfair bad-mouthing of bankers during the debate. Speaking to a crowd of about 26,000 at the University of Wisconsin on Tuesday, President Obama did his best to rile the base. One of the arrows in his rhetorical quiver was a to make the college audience feel trivialized by quoting “they,” the pundits in Washington, who are saying that the Democratic base is “apathetic” and that a “bloodletting” is in order because of an “enthusiasm gap.”

But that’s not quite the case. The “news” that Obama mentions has been filled this week with Democrats saying exactly what Obama is trying to pin on “they” and “Washington.”

For example, on Monday Vice President Joe Biden encouraged Democratic donors to “remind our base constituency to stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives.” When MSNBC later asked if he wanted to retract that statement, he said no, and added, “Those who — didn’t get everything they wanted, it’s time to just buck up here, understand that we can make things better.” READ MORE...
