WTF?!? U.S. ensures that bin Laden's body handled in accord with Islamic tradition

Here's a telling nugget from an AP story on the death of Osama (thanks to Bryan Preston):

Officials said the U.S. would ensure that bin Laden's body was handled in accordance with Islamic tradition.

But why? After all, didn't Barack Obama say this tonight?

"We must also reaffirm that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims."

So why is the body of a mass murderer of Muslims being handled in accordance with Islamic tradition? Aren't U.S. officials thereby tacitly acknowledging that bin Laden was a Muslim leader, notwithstanding Barack Obama's protestations to the contrary?

And if Osama was indeed a Muslim leader, what are the implications of that for U.S. policy?

There's a question no one in official Washington will dare to answer.

  1. Actually, that's a tricky situation, and judging by the comments from both sides, East and West, it's not something anyone could have possibly gotten right enough.

On the one hand, we don't want to acknowledge Osama as a "Muslim" leader because we don't want to equate Islam with extremist terrorism. On the second hand, we don't want to piss off those extremist terrorist who DO view Osama as a Muslim leader. So we do our best to give him as close to a muslim burial as possible. But guess what? Even the extremists aren't satisfied, because some of them are saying that you can't bury the guy at sea if he wasn't killed at sea, while we're saying no single country would take his body.

That's something you and the Islamic extremists seem to have in common: no matter how the Obama Administration had handled this, you'd both still say that they did it all wrong.
