Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” New York Times columnist and economist Paul Krugman said the president’s apparent shift to the center recently is “kinda sad” and went on to say that America is not about competition.

The comment came as host Christiane Amanpour brought up the recent appointment of GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt as the chair of the White House’s new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. That, coupled with some apparent pro-business decisions recently, led to the topic of the president’s “shift” and a discussion of competition (the foundation of business and capitalism). When Amanpour said competition was about as American as apple pie (paraphrase) Krugman couldn’t have disagreed more.

Regarding the president becoming “pro-business,” we noted last week that the president‘s regulation executive order wasn’t as groundbreaking as some initially thought. So with that said, Krugman’s statement that the president appearing pro-business could just be another way to dress up and “sell” more public investment might be the most accurate of his comments.

(CNSNews.com) – Three local chapters of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), whose political action committee spent $27 million supporting Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, have received temporary waivers from a provision in the Obamacare law.

The three SEIU chapters include the Local 25 in Obama’s hometown of Chicago.

The waivers allow health insurance plans to limit how much they will spend on a policy holder’s medical coverage for a given year. Under the new health care law, however, such annual limits are phased out by the year 2014. The ideas presented to him, though, seemed familiar and uninspired. Obama's frustration could set the tone for the remainder of his term. For all the trials of war and terrorism, the economy has come to define his presidency. During the first half of his term, he used the tools of government to shape the nation's economy more aggressively than any president in 75 years. As the national debt rises and Republicans assume more power on Capitol Hill, it won't be easy finding ways to juice the economy that are exciting, effective and politically viable. Every day, in briefings, in trips around the country, in letters from the public, Obama is reminded of the many people who are still hurting. And he surely knows that if he cannot figure out in the next two years how to create jobs, he may lose his own.

Obama is fighting to keep Republicans, fresh from their fall electoral triumph, from reversing what he has started while prodding his own team to come up with something, anything, to put people back to work. "The president wanted to lower unemployment but didn't see a way to get more money out of Congress," one adviser who sat in on many such meetings told me. "He grew frustrated because the economic team didn't have that magic combination." Or as another adviser put it, "He was really frustrated that there weren't solutions on the cheap."

On Friday evening, MSNBC “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann abruptly announced the prime-time broadcast would be his last, ending a four-year contract extension he signed in 2008 early

“I was supposed to fill in for the late Jerry Nachman for exactly three days. Forty-nine days later there was a four-year contract for me to return to this nightly 8 PM time slot which I had fled four years earlier,” Olbermann said Friday. “The program grew thanks entirely to your support with great rewards for me and I hope for you,” he told viewers.

“There were many occasions particularly in the last two and a half years where all that surrounded the show — but never the show itself — was just too much for me. But your support and loyalty and if I may use the word insistence ultimately required that I keep going.”

The network issued a brief statement Friday that it had ended its contract with the controversial host, offering no further explanation.

“MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of ‘Countdown with Keith Olbermann’ will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” the statement said.

NBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines insisted that the newly approved acquisition of NBC Universal by Comcast had nothing to do with Olbermann’s exit.

Olbermann‘s program has boasted the network’s highest ratings, but his controversial — and often combative — liberal opinions made him a target for critics. In the past, he and network executives have clashed, including a two-day suspension last fall after it was revealed he broke corporate ethics policies banning political donations.

Starting Monday, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” is slated to fill Olbermann’s vacated 8 p.m. ET/PT time slot, and “The Ed Show,” hosted by progressive radio host Ed Schultz, will move to 10 p.m. Cenk Uygur, an occasional stand-in host and MSNBC contributor will fill in during the 6 p.m. hour.

Update: CNN’s Anderson Cooper tweeted Friday evening that Olbermann was “fired” from MSNBC:

NOTE- In August 1980, Olbermann suffered a head injury while "leaping" onto the NYC subway.

This head injury permanently upset his equilibrium, resulting in his avoidance of driving. It could also be the reason for his mental problems and anger issues. But we're glad he's gone. He's a dishonest, nasty, ignorant and hateful person.

It seems the new tone called for by the left after the shootings in Tucson is hitting a sour note this week.

First, on Tuesday, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) compared Republicans to Nazis. And now, on Wednesday, Joan Rivers used the term to characterize Sarah Palin.

Rivers made the comments on Joy Behar’s show while explaining why her recently-scheduled appearance on Fox News was canceled. According to Rivers, that happened because she said “I don’t think Sarah Palin is very smart.” Fox, however, denies she was canceled intentionally, and instead said she was supposed to be rescheduled for a later show.

Still, that didn’t stop Rivers from letting Palin and Fox have it (and also taking a shot at Palin’s daughter, Bristol) while talking with Behar:



As Mediaite points out, Rivers’s anti-Palin rhetoric began this past weekend. She told the website TMZ this weekend that Palin is at fault for the Tucson shootings and then referred to Palin as “stupid and a threat.” Those comments can be viewed by clicking here.

Did Glenn Beck Really Tell His Audience to ‘Shoot’ People ‘In the Head’? "Nothing Could be Further From the Truth."

First, the clip making the rounds:

There’s a 22-second Glenn Beck clip starting to make its way around the internet. It reportedly shows Beck telling his audience to “shoot them in the head” (and never explaining who “them” are). Liberals have used the statement as proof that Beck is calling on his audience to take up arms against the government. So is he? Was he?

Not even close.

The website Patterico’s Pontifications went in depth to look at the clip and its full context. What it found can only be considered depressing for the liberals and progressives trying to incite anti-Beck anger.

Pretty damning, huh? One commenter on YouTube even wrote, “This is why Comedy Central is my news channel and Fox News is my comedy channel.”

But there’s just one problem: the video actually means something completely different from what is being portrayed. Patterico’s Pontifications tracked down a transcript of the show and found what Beck was really saying — he was discussing what might happen if the progressives succeed in rallying the left to violent revolution:

When you read it, you will see that the word “you” refers to the leftist politicians in Washington and their pals in the media, and “they” refers to their radical leftist friends — who, Beck warns, actually believe there must be violent revolution . . . and if they don’t get what they want, they may start one.

FINALLY: Greenpeace Founder Questions Man-Made Global Warming

Patrick Moore, co-founder of the environmental organization Greenpeace, isn’t too hot about global warming. Appearing on Fox Business Network with Stuart Varney on Thursday, he said global warming is a “natural phenomenon,” there’s no proof of man-made global warming, and suggested that “alarmism” is driving politicians to create bad environmental policies. He also said he’s not the only environmentalist that believes like him:


Moore is the author of the book, “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout: The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist,” in which he exposes the green movement and explains why he left the organization.

While talking with Varney, he explained that departure was in part due to the group’s “extremist positions” and it being hijacked by political and social causes as well as the left:

Democrats Taps ACORN Funder (Please Stop Voting Democrat! Please...)

In a letter Thursday, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine announced that he had selected Patrick Gaspard to serve as the political party’s new executive director.

The selection is certain to draw criticism from conservatives because of Gaspard’s past association with activist organization ACORN.

Gaspard donated thousands of dollars to ACORN, The American Spectator has reported, and worked for New York’s Working Families Party and labor union SEIU.

Kaine wrote in the letter, “He understands the importance of grassroots politics and team building… Working together, I am confident that we can protect the progress of the past two years, achieve important electoral victories in 2011 and 2012.”

WHAT A 'SCUMBAG' POLITICIAN LOOKS LIKE: Anderson Cooper Has Frustrating Exchange With Nazi-Comparing Rep.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper became visibly frustrated last night while interviewing Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) about his comments comparing Republicans to a Nazi propagandist. Flummoxed, confused, and shocked might also sum up Cooper’s reaction.

In short, Cooper tried to explain to Cohen why his comments were unnecessary and over the line, and repeatedly tried to get Cohen to to see the hypocrisy of his words as Republicans are repeatedly ridiculed for theirs. But, alas, Cohen just could not, or would not, understand Cooper’s point. During the interview, you can almost imagine Cooper holding his head in his hands and rolling his eyes off camera.

It’s important to note, as Cooper does, that Cohen recently wrote an op-ed explaining “Reckless and hateful speech often has a terrible human cost.” Yet Cohen defends his comments by saying he was simply speaking “off the cuff.”

Cohen again tried to make himself look better by saying Politifact (not him) that named the idea of a “government takeover of health care” as the lie of 2010.
